마스크는 바이러스와 싸우기 위한 최소한의 방패 역할을 합니다. 미국 보건복지부에 따르면 마스크는 착용자가 기침, 재채기, 말하거나 큰 목소리를 낼 때 나오는 호흡기 비말이 다른 사람에게 또는 공기 중에 퍼지는 것을 막는 간단한 장벽 역할을 하기 떄문에 착용하는 것이 좋다고 합니다. 이것을 감염원 통제라고 합니다. - 코로나 바이러스 발병 초기에 미국은 마스크의 효능에 대해 강조를 하지 않았습니다. 그러나 마스크의 효과가 얼마나 중요한지 수개월이 지난 지금은 강조를 하고 있습니다.
- 이 권장사항은 COVID-19 유발 바이러스 확산에서 호흡기 비말의 역할에 대해 우리가 이미 알게된 사실에 기초한 것으로, 임상 및 실험실 연구를 통해 코와 입을 가리는 마스크를 착용하면 착용자의 비말 확산이 줄어든다는 새로운 증거 결과가 이를 뒷받침합니다.
COVID-19는 밀접한 거리(6피트 이내)에 가까이 있는 사람들 사이에서 주로 퍼지므로, 사람들이 서로 가까이 있는 환경이나 사회적 거리두기 실천이 어려운 곳에서는 마스크 착용이 특히 중요합니다. 한편 마스크를 쓰지 말아야 할 사람들도 있는데요. 다음과 같은 사람들은 마스크를 쓰지 않아야 합니다. - 2세 미만의 유아
- 호흡에 어려움이 있는 사람
- 의식이 없거나 움직일 수 없거나, 다른 사람의 도움 없이는 마스크를 벗을 수 없는 사람
또한 호기 밸브 또는 통풍구가 있는 마스크가 얼마나 위험한지에 대해서도 알 필요가 있습니다. - 마스크의 목적은 호흡기 비말이 다른 사람에게 닿지 않도록 하여 감염원 통제를 돕는 것입니다.
- 일방 밸브 또는 통풍구가 있는 마스크를 사용하면 내쉬는 공기가 소재 구멍을 통해 밖으로 배출되며 숨을 쉴 때 나오는 호흡기 비말이 다른 사람에게 닿는 결과로 이어집니다. 이런 유형의 마스크는 착용해도 COVID-19 전염 방지에 도움이 되지 않습니다.
